The Visual Artist

"I've tried to recreate on canvas
the harmony which exists between
the people and the places of the North.
This unity between the human being
and nature is for me the
true reflection of the North."

Ever since he can remember
Gérald Laroche wanted to be an artist.
Forever drawing, he published his first cartoon
in grade two, in the school newspaper.

Since then, it's his career as a musician
that has moved to the forefront, yet he has
continued to develop his talents as a visual artist.

Since completing studies in graphic Arts
at Red River Community College, in Winnipeg,
he has participated in a variety of exhibitions
and has conducted workshops throughout the province.

Travelling throughout the country for musical
performances has allowed Gérald Laroche
to experience the colours, images, and feelings
of the North. Wildlife, the native people
and their legends are what inspire
both his music and his artwork.

As with his music, his paintings are compositions
that tell a story and express a mood.
They contain multiple images, bringing together
elements of the land, the people, and their history.
Here is a reflection on a place,
a people and a way of life.
